Who we are

Ashby Insider is an independent local newsletter and website for Ashby-de-la-Zouch and the surrounding villages. The data controller is J Bloor, trading as Ashby Insider, Enterprise House, Ashby Road, Woodville, DE11 7BS. You can contact us at [email protected] or by using our message form.

What we collect and why

What Why Lawful basis
Your email address (and first name, if you give it) when you sign up To send you the weekly newsletter Consent
Whether you opened our emails and clicked links in them, recorded by our email provider To see how many people read each issue and which stories are useful, as overall figures Consent, given when you sign up (opens); legitimate interests (clicks)
Tips, event listings, messages and advertising enquiries you send through our forms, with any contact details you include. With each one we also store the country it was sent from (worked out by Cloudflare from your connection, not your exact location) and the page on our site you sent it from To check and publish local information, to reply to you and to spot spam or abuse Legitimate interests
Technical data such as your IP address and browser details, when you use a form To stop spam and abuse (see “Spam protection” below) Legitimate interests

Our emails contain a small tracking image (a pixel) that tells Kit when an email is opened, and links go through Kit so clicks can be counted. Kit doesn’t let us switch this off. We only look at overall figures, such as how many people opened an issue, and we never use opens to judge, target or profile individual readers. You can stop open tracking at any time by turning off images in your email app, or by unsubscribing.

Where we rely on legitimate interests, we’ve weighed our needs against your privacy and kept what we collect to the minimum. You can object at any time (see “Your rights” below).

We don’t sell your data. We never pass your email address to advertisers or anyone else. We don’t use your data for anything other than running Ashby Insider. We never publish the contact details you give us with a tip or event. We don’t store your IP address with form submissions; it is only passed to Cloudflare for the spam check.

Who processes data for us

  • Email newsletter: Kit. Our mailing list is stored by Kit (Kit Inc., formerly ConvertKit), a company based in the United States, which sends the newsletter for us. When you sign up, your browser sends your details to our own website, and our server then passes your email address, first name (if given) and the page you signed up on to Kit. Kit holds your details straight away as an unconfirmed subscriber and sends you one email with a link to confirm (double opt-in). You won’t get any newsletters unless you click that link. If you’re already a confirmed subscriber, or you unsubscribed before, signing up again on the website doesn’t change anything. If you signed up before but haven’t confirmed yet, signing up again keeps you as unconfirmed and notes that you signed up on the website again. Kit records when you open an email and click links in it. Because Kit is in the US, your data is transferred outside the UK. Kit’s Data Processing Addendum, which forms part of Kit’s terms of service, covers this transfer with the EU Standard Contractual Clauses together with the UK International Data Transfer Addendum (the ICO’s addendum to those clauses).
  • Website hosting and form storage: Cloudflare. The website runs on Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare processes technical data such as IP addresses to deliver and protect the site. What you send through our tip, event, message and advertising forms is stored in a private Cloudflare database (Workers KV). Only the editor of Ashby Insider can see it, on a password-protected admin page. Cloudflare’s Data Processing Addendum is part of the agreement we have with Cloudflare. Cloudflare is based in the United States, and transfers from the UK to the US are covered by Cloudflare’s certification under the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, with the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK International Data Transfer Addendum as a back-up if that certification ever lapses.
  • Spam protection: Cloudflare Turnstile. Our forms use Cloudflare Turnstile, an “I’m human” check, instead of a puzzle. To do this, Cloudflare looks at information about your browser and connection, such as your IP address and browser details. Cloudflare says it uses this only to tell people from bots and to improve that check, not to identify, profile or target anyone. Turnstile doesn’t read what you type into our forms.
  • No extra copies of form submissions: our website could also send a copy of each form submission by email (through an email delivery service called Resend) or to a private web address we control (a “webhook”). We don’t use either of these. If that changes, we’ll update this notice first.
  • Analytics: we don’t use any analytics on the website. If that changes, we’ll update this notice first.

How long we keep it

  • Newsletter: we keep your email address until you unsubscribe. If you don’t confirm your sign-up, Kit keeps your details as unconfirmed until we delete them. We never email unconfirmed addresses, and we delete unconfirmed sign-ups after 60 days (we clear them out once a month, so it can occasionally take a few weeks longer).
  • Form submissions: tips, event listings, messages and enquiries are deleted automatically 12 months after we receive them, or sooner once we’ve dealt with them.
  • Published events: when we publish an event, we may publish a short summary based on the description you send, plus the event details you give us (event name, date, venue, organiser, price and link). These stay on the website as part of our listings, without your contact details.

Unsubscribing and deleting your data

  • To unsubscribe, click “Unsubscribe” at the bottom of any newsletter. It takes effect straight away.
  • To ask us to delete your data, or to see what we hold about you, contact us at [email protected] or use our message form. We’ll delete you from Kit and from our form submissions, normally within a month.

Your rights

You have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data, to restrict or object to how we use it, to get a copy of it in a format you can take elsewhere (data portability) and to withdraw consent at any time. To use any of these rights, contact us at [email protected].

We don’t make any decisions about you by automated means alone, including profiling.

If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, please contact us first at [email protected] and we’ll try to put it right. We’ll acknowledge your complaint within 30 days. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

Children

Ashby Insider is written for adults in the local area. Please don’t sign up or send us anything if you’re under 13. If we find we hold a child’s details, we’ll delete them.

Cookies

The website doesn’t set its own cookies and doesn’t use analytics. The sign-up form sends your details to our own website, and our server passes them to Kit, so Kit doesn’t load anything or set cookies on our pages. The only thing stored in your browser is by Cloudflare Turnstile, on pages with forms: it may keep a small amount of information in your browser (in cookies or local storage) that is strictly needed for the spam check. Cloudflare says this isn’t used to identify, profile or target anyone. If we ever add analytics or embedded content from other sites, we’ll update this notice first.

Our emails contain a tracking pixel from Kit that records opens; see above for how to block it.

Changes to this notice

If we change this notice, we’ll update the date at the top. If the changes are significant, we’ll also tell subscribers by email.
